The African Court Judges meeting in Arusha, Tanzania in their 10th session elected Judge Jean Mutsinzi of Rwanda as the New President of the Court and Judge Sophia Akuffo of Ghana as the Vice-President. They replace Judge Gerald Niyungeko and Judge Modibo Tounty GUINDO respectively, whose 2 year tenure as President and Vice-President expired recently.
The elections took place 15 September 2008, after the Swear-in-ceremony of the new Judges elected during the AU Summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt in July 2008. Judge Akuffo is a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana, who was re-elected by the AU Assembly in July 2008 for a term of 6 years while Judge Mutsinzi still has 4 years remaining from his initial 6 year term as a Judge of the African Court. They will both serve in their new capacities for a term of 2 years renewable once.
