The Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Court Coalition/the Coalition) together with ICJ-Kenya and Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) carried a successful advocacy mission in Nairobi, Kenya from 11 to 13 November 2015.

The main objective of the advocacy mission was to impress on the importance of deposit of the Declaration under Article 34(6) of the Protocol establishing the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (the African Court Protocol) by the government of Kenya so as to allow direct access to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights(African Court) for Individuals and NGOs with observer status before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights( African Commission) .

The mission also increased awareness about the work of the African Court as well as the work of the African Court Coalition. One member was recruited to join the fast growing African Court Coalition in line with the African Court Coalition ‘Bring Two’ Campaign.

A meeting with Civil Society Organisations was held on 11 November 2015 at PrideInn Hotel where discussions were carried out on why Kenya is yet to deposit the Declaration under Article 34(6) of the African Court Protocol and advocacy strategies were adopted to help influence and speed up the process of deposit of the Declaration by the government of Kenya. ICJ-Kenya and KHRC will continue to work with the Coalition to follow up on the implementation of the advocacy strategies adopted.

The Coalition and ICJ-Kenya also had an opportunity to meet with the Attorney General of Kenya, Prof. Githu Muigai where they discussed on Kenya’s position with regard to deposit of Article 34(6) Declaration as required under the African Court Protocol.

The African Court Coalition is grateful to Deutsche Gesellschaft Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) for the financial support of this advocacy mission.
