The Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Court Coalition/the Coalition) Internship Programme is designed to give opportunities to highly motivated students and young graduates with diverse backgrounds to work with our organization in order to learn and improve their technical and analytical skills. They also get the chance to contribute and support the general functions, mission and visions of the organization in an international environment.
Application Period
The Coalition receives internship applications for three rounds in a year; November, March and August.
Types of Internships
Our internship programme falls under the following categories;
- Physical presence (working at the Coalition Secretariat in Arusha);
- Remote-work (Interns can work from wherever they are);
- Hybrid (working partly from the Secretariat and remotely)
Please note that for all categories of internships interns will be required to abide with the given work timelines and deadlines, and they will be under strict supervision.
Eligibility
The Internship programme is open to students and young graduates with specialization in areas which relate to the African Court Coalition substantive work programme.
Education
To qualify for an internship with the African Court Coalition, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (first or second university degree or equivalent);
2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
3) Have graduated with a university degree within 3 years period (first or second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
Language skills
English, French, Portuguese, Swahili and Arabic are working languages of the African Court Coalition. However, Fluency in English (both oral and written) is mandatory for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of any of the other mentioned languages is an added bonus.
Important Note
Please note that Internship at the African Court Coalition is unpaid, interns are not financially remunerated.
For physical presence Internship, successful candidates have the responsibility of arranging their own travel, accommodation and cost of living. The Coalition shall provide technical assistance on visa application for non-Tanzanian interns.
The Coalition accepts no responsibility for medical and/or life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during their internship. Interns will be requested to show proof of insurance when commencing their internship programme.
The Internship programme does not guarantee or lead to employment with the African Court Coalition.
At all times interns undertake to abide by the Coalition relevant internal polies and conduct themselves in a professional manner compatible with their assigned duties and responsibilities.
Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known during the course of their internship programme and they will not publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained during their internship except with the authorization of the Coalition.
Due to the high volume of applications received, the Coalition is not in a position to provide individual feedback. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Secretariat for an interview. If you do not hear from the Coalition Secretariat within four weeks after you have submitted your application, you can safely assume that your application did not go through and you can apply again on the following round of applications.
CURRENT OPENINGS
- Title: Information & Communication Technology (ICT Intern)
Internship Type: Hybrid (working partly from the Secretariat and remotely)

The internship is UNPAID. The ICT intern will be required to reside in Arusha but he/she will work partly at the Coalition Secretariat and remotely. The minimum duration of this internship is three months but it can be extended for up to a total period of eight months. The intern will work under the supervision of the assigned relevant staff member.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern will be required to perform the following tasks: –
- Provide assistance in the maintenance and regular updates and synchronization of the Coalition website and social media accounts
- Provide assistance in improving the functionality of the Coalition website and the Members’ Portal through the use of relevant software applications
- Assist in the organisation and management of Coalition virtual meetings through relevant software applications
- Provide support and assist in designing Coalition publications, Newsletters and publicity materials to promote visibility of the Coalition
- Provide support for computer information systems, software and applications
- Assist in developing mechanisms for strengthening communication with the Coalition membership, partners and other stakeholders
- Assist in the coordination of media coverage of Coalition events and liaise with news and publication agencies
- Participate and provide assistance in the administrative functions of Coalition’s events such as training workshops, seminars and conferences
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
COMPETENCIES
To qualify for ICT internship, applicants must have the following competences;
Education
1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme in the field of ICT (first or second university degree or equivalent);
2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in the field of ICT (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
3) Have graduated with a university degree in ICT field within 3 years period (first or second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
Technological Awareness
Be computer literate in standard software applications, keep abreast of available Communication and Information technologies and show willingness to learn new technologies in this field.
Languages
English, French, Portuguese, Swahili and Arabic are working languages of the African Court Coalition. However, Fluency in English (both oral and written) is mandatory for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of any of the other mentioned languages is an added bonus.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have a prior professional work experience to be enrolled in the Coalition Internship programme.

Programme: Public Awareness, Advocacy & Capacity Building
Internship Type: Remote work

Language Requirement: Bi-lingual (either English/French or English/Portuguese)

The internship is UNPAID. The intern will provide assistance to the Public Awareness, Advocacy and Capacity Building programme of the African Court Coalition and she/he will work remotely from anywhere. The minimum duration of this internship is three months but it can be extended up to a total period of eight months. The intern will work under the supervision of the assigned staff member.
Specific tasks of the Intern may include the following;
- Assist in the advocacy, outreach and public awareness activities including preparation of advocacy materials and background material for presentations
- Assist in the preparations of Coalition capacity building activities and other virtual and physical activities and prepare reports for such activities
- Make regular follow ups and report on the activities of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, other REC’s tribunals and other African Human Rights mechanisms
- Attend Court sessions of the African Court during delivery of judgments and prepare updates for Coalition Members and partners
- Make regular follow ups and report on relevant activities of other regional Human Rights mechanisms such as the European Court of Human Rights and Inter-American Court of Human Rights
- Provide assistance in drafting News Letters, Booklets, Brochures, annual narrative reports and other relevant materials
- Conduct background research on relevant issues
- Provide translation support (English to French and vice versa or English to Portuguese and vice versa) for publications, media contents and internal communications
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor

The internship is UNPAID. The intern will provide assistance to the Coalition Building and Organizational Development programme and she/he will work remotely from anywhere. The minimum duration of this internship is three months but it can be extended up to a total period of eight months. The intern will work under the supervision of the assigned staff member.
Specific tasks of the Intern may include the following;
- Provide assistance in the process of Membership recruitments
- Assist in the management of Coalition Members Portal
- Assist in the implementation of communications strategy to enhance visibility of the Coalition and the African Court
- Assist in the production of advocacy and communication materials and contents for the website and social media
- Assist in administrative tasks including updating the Membership contact lists, updating the Coalition website and social media with relevant and timely news
- Assist in the preparations of Coalition virtual and physical activities and prepare reports on such activities
- Provide translation support (English to French and vice versa or English to Portuguese and vice versa) for publications, media contents and internal communications
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor
COMPETENCIES

3) Have graduated with a university degree in any of the following fields; Public Administration, Law, Communication and Media, Organizational Development, International Relations or equivalent, within 2 years period (first or second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
Technological Awareness
Be computer literate in standard software applications and keep abreast of available Communication and Information technologies. Excellent knowledge of social media technologies is a bonus.
